Barware refers to the tools, glassware, and accessories used for making and serving drinks at home or in a bar. Whether you're hosting a party or just enjoying a drink after a long day, having the right barware can make all the difference. Here are the key pieces you need to have in your collection:
1. Cocktail Shaker
A cocktail shaker is a must-have for mixing cocktails like martinis, margaritas, and mojitos. There are two main types:
- Boston Shaker: Consists of two tins, one of which can be a glass, used by professional bartenders.
- Cobbler Shaker: Has three parts – a metal tin, a lid with a built-in strainer, and a cap. It’s easier for beginners to use.
2. Jigger
A jigger is a small, dual-sided measuring tool used to accurately pour spirits. One side usually measures 1 ounce, and the other measures 1.5 ounces, helping to ensure your cocktails have the perfect balance of ingredients.
3. Mixing Spoon
A long-handled mixing spoon is essential for stirring drinks, especially those made directly in the glass or in a mixing glass. Its length ensures you can reach the bottom of tall glasses without spilling.
4. Strainer
After shaking or stirring a cocktail, you need a strainer to pour the liquid into the glass without the ice or unwanted bits. The Hawthorne Strainer is a common type with a spring that helps catch ice and pulp.
5. Muddler
A muddler is a tool used to crush herbs, fruits, and sugar in the bottom of a glass, releasing their flavors. It’s key for making drinks like mojitos and old fashioneds.
6. Glassware
Different drinks call for different types of glasses. Some essential glassware includes:
- Highball Glass: Tall and narrow, perfect for cocktails like gin and tonics or rum and coke.
- Old Fashioned Glass (Lowball or Rocks Glass): Short and wide, ideal for drinks served "on the rocks," such as whiskey or an old fashioned.
- Martini Glass: A V-shaped glass for martinis and other "up" cocktails.
- Wine Glasses: Typically divided into red and white wine glasses, with red glasses having a larger bowl to allow for more aeration.
- Shot Glasses: Small glasses for measuring and serving spirits straight.
7. Bottle Opener and Corkscrew
You can’t enjoy a bottle of beer or wine without the proper tools! A bottle opener for beer and a corkscrew for wine are essentials in any barware collection.
8. Ice Bucket and Tongs
For serving drinks on the rocks or chilling bottles, an ice bucket and tongs are important. They help keep your drinks cold and make it easy to handle ice cubes without making a mess.
9. Wine Stopper
If you don’t finish a bottle of wine, a wine stopper helps preserve its freshness by preventing air from getting in.
10. Coasters
Coasters help protect your surfaces from drink condensation and spills. They come in various materials like cork, wood, or leather and add a touch of style to your bar setup.
