The Royal History:
Commissioned in 1899 by Siberian gold-mining heir Alexander Kelch as an Easter gift for his wife, Barbara, this masterpiece is one of seven celebrated Kelch eggs. While not an official imperial state gift, the private Kelch commissions were known to rival the Tsar's own Easter creations in ambition, quality, and breathtaking beauty. Supervised by master craftsman Michael Perkhin, the original 1899 treasure featured a warm translucent pink guilloché enamel and was elegantly divided into twelve vertical panels by diamond-studded gold bands. The original design showcased Barbara's initials beneath a portrait diamond at the top, while the base displayed the year "1899".
Although the hidden surprise concealed inside remains lost to time, the piece itself survived the tumultuous early 20th century. After being sold in Paris during the 1920s, it was eventually purchased by King George V in 1933. Today, the authentic 1899 jewel remains a prestigious part of the British Royal Collection, admired worldwide for its extraordinary romantic sentiment and timeless craftsmanship.
