26th U.S. Infantry, 1815

On June 18, 1812, the United States declared war on England after a series of blockades and taking of American sailors. The Army called upon state militias to provide troops as well as recruited volunteers to fight in the war. They faced difficulties filling their ranks as not all states had sufficient militias, and other citizens did not readily enlist in large enough numbers. This led to the enlistment of African Americans in the Army.
