Compass Rose

Sometimes referred to as rose of the winds, this is a figure on a compass, map, nautical chart, or monument used to display the orientation of the cardinal directions (north, east, south, and west) and their intermediate points.  The compass rose has appeared on charts and maps since the 1300’s when the portolan charts first made their appearance. The term “rose” comes from the figure’s compass points resembling the petals of the well-known flower. Naming them all off perfectly was known as “boxing the compass”.  Our compass rose is hand cast in solid, lead-free pewter.  All compass pins have a secure, US made, military style butterfly clasp to keep your pin secure.
