Lapis lazuli is a deep-blue metamorphic rock prized since antiquity for its intense color. It is primarily composed of the mineral lazurite, along with other minerals like calcite, sodalite, and pyrite, which often creates a subtle gold flecking throughout the stone. The name “lapis lazuli” comes from Latin and Persian roots, meaning “blue stone.”

History and Significance

Historically, lapis lazuli has held great cultural and artistic significance. The ancient Egyptians used it for jewelry, ornaments, and inlays, associating it with royalty and the heavens. They also ground it to make ultramarine, a valuable pigment used in illuminated manuscripts and Renaissance paintings. In the Middle East and Central Asia, it was thought to have protective and healing properties, symbolizing wisdom and truth.

Uses and Properties

Lapis lazuli is still valued in modern jewelry, carved into beads, cabochons, and small sculptures. Its ultramarine pigment was replaced by synthetic alternatives, but it remains appreciated for artistic and decorative purposes. In terms of metaphysical properties, it’s often associated with self-awareness, clarity, and spiritual insight.
