Stitch Lord of the Woods, a counted cross stitch kit by Bothy Threads — a round cock pheasant with a green head and red wattle struts on long legs with his tail feathers raised.

A little stitcher's folklore: pheasants were probably brought to Britain by the Romans or Normans, and the cock's loud 'korr-kok' call often greets a thunderclap.

Why this kit: based on artwork by Hannah Dale of Wrendale Designs, it is stitched on Aida printed with Bothy Threads' exclusive speckled background.

Kit includes: 14-count Zweigart Aida printed with an exclusive speckled background, pre-sorted stranded cottons, a needle and a clear stitch diagram and instructions. Stitches used: full cross stitches, a few fractionals, back stitch and two French knots. A frame is not included.

Stitch the pheasant in cross stitch from the centre of the chart, add fractionals where shown, then the feathers in back stitch and the two French knots.

Finished size: 26×26 cm (10.2×10.2 in). A country favourite for a hallway or study.
