Closed, Bookshop Memories looks like a tall burgundy wooden cabinet with a little hanging sign, fretwork double doors with tiny latches, and side panels painted with an open book, a quill and drawn curtains framed in gold scrollwork. Swing the doors open and a warm glow lights a tiny antique bookshop: a carved rocking chair and a round table with an open book, a potted plant, shelves packed with miniature volumes, framed portraits and landscapes, a stag plaque, a gramophone, a stack of vinyl records, and an arched gothic window looking out onto a snowy evening street.

A little crafter's folklore: book nook builders say a nook should be built slowly, one evening at a time, and that the room only truly moves in the first time you switch on its lights. Some collectors tuck a real bookmark from a favourite read behind the shelves before closing the last panel.

Why this book nook: if you want a first build that still feels special, this is a good place to start. It's compact, the door-front cabinet protects the finished scene from dust, and there is enough fine detail inside (portraits, records, a gramophone and dozens of tiny books) to reward a close look. Closed, it reads as a decorative cabinet; open, it becomes a lit diorama for a desk or bookshelf.

In the box: pre-cut and printed wooden sheets for the cabinet, doors and base; printed paper sheets for the wallpaper, books, pictures and signage; fabric pieces; miniature furniture and accessory parts; LED lighting with wiring; and an illustrated instruction manual. Glue and scissors are needed and not included. A craft knife and tweezers make the small parts easier.

It belongs to the same library series as Owl Bookstore and Count Cat's Study. If you love bookshop scenes, also see Eternal Bookstore, Green Life Bookshop, Jack's Bookery and Salton's Retro Bookstore. Build tip: assemble the cabinet shell and base first, furnish the room from the back wall forward, fit the lights last, and check the doors open freely before the glue sets.

Size: about 17 cm tall (6.7 in), with an 11.5 x 10 cm footprint (4.5 x 3.9 in). A cosy display for a desk, bookshelf or bedside table, and a thoughtful gift for book lovers, readers, teachers and anyone who enjoys a relaxing evening craft. Recommended for ages 14 and up.
