Stitch Variety of Life, a counted cross stitch kit by Bothy Threads — a kingfisher, blue tit, barn owl, robin and wren line up along a single branch.

A little stitcher's folklore: the kingfisher was once called the 'halcyon', from a Greek myth that it calmed the sea to nest on the waves.

Why this kit: based on artwork by Hannah Dale of Wrendale Designs, it is stitched on Aida printed with Bothy Threads' exclusive speckled background, so the soft Wrendale look is ready-made.

Kit includes: 16-count white Zweigart Aida printed with an exclusive speckled background, pre-sorted stranded cottons, a needle and a clear stitch diagram and instructions. Stitches used: cross stitch, back stitch and French knots. A frame is not included.

Stitch the birds in cross stitch from the centre, then add the branch and feathers in back stitch and the French knots.

Finished size: 38×18 cm (15×7.1 in). A long piece for a birdwatcher's hallway or study.
